The Land of Opportunity Fund was established by local anonymous donors associated with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation concerned with the paucity of legal services and information available to immigrant residents in the region.
The donors have committed to match donations of $50,000 or more with an equal donation. Its purpose is to provide recurring grants to sustain nonprofits that provide a wide range of services to immigrants. The fund is administered by the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, which through assets contributed by donors, fosters regional change for the common good in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties.
Through its grant making, the Fund aims to sustain nonprofits that serve immigrants and to support innovative ideas to meet the needs of both the immigrant community and the economy of Southwest Florida. Major donors to the Fund will constitute an advisory board and assist in evaluating grant applications. The Fund is seeking to raise $5 million for this effort and all contributions are tax-deductible.
Immigration Legal Services (ILS) supplements staffing support in nonprofits to place qualified attorneys and accredited non-lawyer practitioners in geographic locations around the region such as United Way houses or other locations convenient for clients.
